Joe E. Woods has started construction on the first spacecraft manufacturing facility built in the United States since 1958.

The $54 million project in Gilbert is for Spectrum Astro, a company that designs, develops, integrates and tests satellites and space-based systems. Phase 1 will have three buildings totaling 270,000 square feet for engineering, manufacturing, testing, offices and an auditorium.

The new campus is on an 80-acre site at the southwest corner of Elliot and McQueen roads, a mile south of the company's current location at 1440 N. Fiesta Blvd.

Deutsch Associates is the project architect.

The first phase is scheduled to be completed in summer 2002.
